Our original offering, basic runners provide slightly better performance than Gitlab.com for half the price. Basic runners are effectively identical to Gitlab.com in execution and are thus highly compatible.

Pre-scaling 

To improve job start-up, idle VMs may be requested and even reused between jobs.

When pre-scaling is configured, active charges are incurred for idle VMs since they are explicitly reserved for a customer to improve start-up time.

Compatibility 

Short of not sharing the same cache as Gitlab.com SaaS runners, our basic runners provide the highest level of compatibility.
